Strong healthcare services, along with the capability to care for our elderly locally, are vital to our community. Clutha Health First is a community owned integrated hospital and health centre based in Balclutha. Along with the general practice group, the hospital provides a wide variety of acute medical, stabilisation, resuscitation and rehabilitation services, together with a specialised palliative care/family room. They also have a wide range of community services, an outpatient department and a primary maternity centre. Emergency cases are handled via the General practitioners with support of the hospital based medical officers. Specialists from Dunedin Hospital visit regularly, minimising the need for patients to travel to Dunedin for some services.
In the outlying areas, Lawrence, Milton and Owaka have resident doctors and medical centres which service their communities.
Tapanui has West Otago Health where all services available are provided from, or based at, a combined purpose built rural community health centre. Services include rural primary health care, emergency care, district nursing, allied health (including occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech language therapy) palliative care and aged related residential care services. The Clutha District has access to physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors, an audiologist and optometrists, who mainly operate out of Balclutha and some outlying areas. Also, excellent aged care facilities include Holmdene Resthome and Hospital, Clutha Views Lifecare, Ashlea Grove in Milton and Ribbonwood in Tapanui.
