LAWRENCE, New Zealand: Organisers planning the Gabriel's Gully Goldrush 150th celebration in Lawrence next March are calling for submissions of stories and artefacts from the Goldrush to form a special exhibition over the four-day event.
They are particularly interested to hear from descendants and relations of the early goldminers and prospectors, or anyone with any information on the Tuapeka Goldfields area. Historical records and artefacts will be displayed at The Goldrush Heritage Centre. The programme also includes Pioneer Stories - an opportunity for people to retell Goldrush stories passed down from their ancestors.
Wayman Roughan, 150 Celebration Committee Chairman says, 'Gathering stories and artefacts from the past are vital to the celebration and will provide visitors and the local community with a fascinating insight into the region's unique heritage. We also want to preserve our storytelling traditionsand we think including Pioneer Stories in the programme is a great way to pass treasured yarns on to the younger generation for them to enjoy.'
Anyone with stories, photographs or information can download an application form from the website
www.lawrence,co.nz or contact the committee office on (03) 485 9909.

Feedback Project Clutha has received indicates young people working in businesses within the Clutha District at times feel isolated and would like the opportunity to network with other young business people in the community. In response to this feedback Project Clutha intend to start a Young Professionals group in the district.
The 'Young Professional Networking Evenings' will be held on a regular basis, with a keynote speaker, refreshments and the opportunity to meet other young people. These evenings are open to anyone within the age group 16 - 40, who work in businesses in the Clutha district. It is intended that the evenings be informal, relaxed and fun. Donna Carline, chairperson of Project Clutha said: "There was a need for this group, many of our members had never met each other before we joined Project Clutha in September 2006, yet we all lived and work within the Balclutha business area. We are keen to hold regular networking events."
The inaugural Young Professionals Networking evening will be held on Thursday, 17th June from 5.30pm, at the Rosebank Lodge.
Our keynote speaker will be Vicki Yarker-Hitchcock. Vicki, originally from Melbourne, has chosen to live and work in Clinton and runs her own business providing workplace supervision and tutoring. She will cover topics including getting on with staff, balancing work, life and home demands while still having time for yourself and your community.
If you would like to come along, or simply find out more, please call Donna Carline on (03) 418 2919 or email

Free Internet Now in Clutha
In case you have been checking your emails in Balclutha, and you have noticed that you have not been charged – you can thank a local computer business and a community group for this.
Project Clutha, in conjunction with Rivernet have been working behind the scenes for a while now, and are pleased to announce free internet to Balclutha’s CDB.
“We have been thinking about this ever since we saw Lawrence was successful with it, and we thought we would like to provide this service to Balclutha residents along with the numerous tourists that pass thru” newly elected Chairperson Donna Carline explains.
At our recent AGM we invited Glenn Hutton and Dave Hunter along to present the proposal of free internet along the main street of Balclutha. Their proposal was too good to pass up, and we are thrilled to be involved with them, and bring Balclutha into the 21st century.
This open access free wireless will be available for the residents and tourists of Balclutha with this service from the Town Hall to Barr Street predominately on the main street encompassing New World and the showground’s area.
Limited to 30 minutes per day but additional time can be purchased in the coming months from various businesses, speed being 256 Kb/s.
With the money raised from our annual Big River Festivals (held in February over the past three years) we are able to pay the monthly running costs to kept this service operating.
We believe it is much needed in Balclutha, as we have noticed late at nights and in the weekends there are not many places for tourists (and locals) can use to assess the internet. We hope this will also work in favour for the local business and will encourage those to stop on their travel, check their emails, have a coffee and shop in Balclutha.
We aim to get some stickers up within the area to help promote this free service in the near future.
