Free Internet Now in Clutha
In case you have been checking your emails in Balclutha, and you have noticed that you have not been charged – you can thank a local computer business and a community group for this.Project Clutha, in conjunction with Rivernet have been working behind the scenes for a while now, and are pleased to announce free internet to Balclutha’s CDB.
“We have been thinking about this ever since we saw Lawrence was successful with it, and we thought we would like to provide this service to Balclutha residents along with the numerous tourists that pass thru” newly elected Chairperson Donna Carline explains.
At our recent AGM we invited Glenn Hutton and Dave Hunter along to present the proposal of free internet along the main street of Balclutha. Their proposal was too good to pass up, and we are thrilled to be involved with them, and bring Balclutha into the 21st century.
This open access free wireless will be available for the residents and tourists of Balclutha with this service from the Town Hall to Barr Street predominately on the main street encompassing New World and the showground’s area.
Limited to 30 minutes per day but additional time can be purchased in the coming months from various businesses, speed being 256 Kb/s.
With the money raised from our annual Big River Festivals (held in February over the past three years) we are able to pay the monthly running costs to kept this service operating.
We believe it is much needed in Balclutha, as we have noticed late at nights and in the weekends there are not many places for tourists (and locals) can use to assess the internet. We hope this will also work in favour for the local business and will encourage those to stop on their travel, check their emails, have a coffee and shop in Balclutha.
We aim to get some stickers up within the area to help promote this free service in the near future.
